It's About Time! Part 5

So far in our series on Time Management we’ve talked about the first step to take, setting priorities and goals and how to set a manageable schedule, and things that rob us of our time.

We’ve skimmed over a lot of thoughts in this mini-series. Today I’d like to wrap it all up with some random final thoughts to help us on our journey.

1. Don’t put things down, put them away. Ten minutes a day spent looking for lost or misplaced items adds up to over 60 hours a year. Think of all that could be done in 60 hours! Break your procrastination habits in this and other areas: instead of thinking, “I’ll do that later,” stop and do it now!

MaryEllen over at Imperfect Homemaker is on a year-long anti-procrastination journey. She has some great thoughts as to why we procrastinate and what can be done to stop that habit!

2. Set goals, then tell others about your goals so that you’ll be motivated and held accountable. You know I set weekly and monthly goals, which I was inspired to do after reading Crystal’s weekly goals over at Money Saving Mom. Every week, I read others goal in a linky party that is encouraging to us all to get them done!

Amy says in her book, “Any significant change in our life will require patience and sacrifice.” And, might I add, goals - a vision of where we want to be!

3. Time management involves breaking bad habits and developing good ones. It also goes hand in hand with self-discipline. In fact, I am amazed how Crystal’s new book, “21 Days to a More Disciplined Life” ties hand-in-hand with this study on Time Management. Because really, you can know exactly how to manage you time wisely and use each moment to its fullest, but if you lack the self discipline to actually do it, what good is it? As Crystal says, I am the problem, but I am also the only solution.

Beginning tomorrow, November 1st, several gals over at Serving Joyfully are beginning the 21 Days to a More Disciplined Life book and challenging us to do the same. Read about it here...I’d encourage you to join in! This will be a great opportunity for some accountability and encouragement as you work through this fantastic book.

4. Take advantage of small blocks of time...sitting at red lights, waiting for supper to cook, etc. For instance…

In 5 minutes, you can schedule an appointment, water houseplants, clean one drawer, dust on piece of furniture or the dash of your vehicle, change a diaper, take out the trash, make out your weekly goals list, or write a short note.

In 10 minutes, you can send a birthday card, organize your desk or a drawer, do a short round of exercises, take freezer or pantry inventory, make out a shopping list, or make a phone call. (Provided you aren’t calling your best friend...that might take longer than 10 minutes. :)

In 30 minutes, you can sort mail, skim through a magazine, work on a project, catch up on emails or facebook, vacuum and dust one room, or even prep one dish for the freezer.

Be thinking ahead of these small blocks of time you may have, and determine what you will do to fill them!

Top Ten Tuesday: Music

If God has given you the gift of music, and in this case specifically the ability to play the piano, I believe it is your responsibility to use it! In my experience, the opportunities to play the piano for different events seem to come out of nowhere, and are endless! Here is a list of ten ways to use the gift of piano playing:

1. Church - obviously! :) My long-time readers know that I play the piano for a small church that previously had no pianist. Even though it means traveling 45 minutes every Sunday, I love it and wouldn’t trade the opportunity for anything!

2. Funerals - I’ve even been asked to play for some outside of my own church

3. Weddings

4. Nursing home - I currently go every Tuesday morning and play for the residents, then help a friend with a Bible study there. My brother plays for a service in a nursing home once a month. Again, tons of possibilities here!

5. Local events - depending on what you have in your area, a school or another public event may need a pianist for a certain event.

6. Mall - especially around Christmas, shopping malls will have live entertainment at certain parts of the day. Our children’s choir in NC got to sing for an evening in our local mall one time. This would be a great way to get some good music in the mall for a change!!!

7. Recording - Missionaries may want a certain song for their video presentations. This would be an easy way to help in this area. Of course, if you are really ambitious, you could record your own Cd! :)

8. Hospitals - Ok, so maybe most hospitals don’t have pianos...but maybe you could take in a small lap keyboard? Or at the very least, you can sing with no piano...I’ve done this many times!

9. Shut ins - during high school my sister and I would go sing to two different shut-ins each week. We would also read portions of scripture to them. This was a great way to learn to serve and appreciate the older generation!

10. Your own enjoyment - don’t forget playing for fun! =)

Can you think of other ways to use music?

The {not so} Craft Sale!

I hyped you up a couple of weeks ago about a Craft Fair I planned on attending. And then I never updated you after the fact! I intended to all last week and never got around to it, so here it is!

I’ll let you in on a secret: when I announced that Monday that I planned to attend a craft fair, I actually hadn’t even reserved my table yet. :) I know, nothing like waiting until the last minute, right? A friend and I had both been planning on going, but I was sort of non-committal, wondering if I really wanted to “put myself out there” like that! I mean, its one thing to post stuff online to sell...in a way, it doesn’t seem as “real” because I’m not face to face with people, trying to sell my products. But to actually sell stuff to real people, now, that seemed like a different story!

So, I finally called to reserve us tables on Tuesday of that week. And guess what...they were full. Bummer! I know, it was totally my own fault! The nice lady on the phone said she’d go over and measure and see if they could squeeze us in...but they ended up having a cancellation! Woot! It ended up being Thursday before I found out for sure that I was going...giving me a whole 1½ days to get ready!

I had quite a bit of stuff prepared, but wanted a few more things to take, so all of Friday was spent busily sewing and planning! I finally felt somewhat prepared to go.

Saturday was a nasty, rainy day, but what better way to spend a rainy Saturday than at a craft fair? :)

Here are some pictures of my table (I was sharing with a friend of mine, so we each squeezed our stuff on to one half of a table. Because we waited until the last minute. :)

I took tote bags, pillowcases and sugar scrub...a little of everything to represent my shop!

I made signs to label everything.

Cute little fall-themed sugar scrubs!

This hook is really for Christmas stockings, but I took it to display a bag on the front of the table...thought it might get people's attention more.
I made these cards for people to pick up so they can find my shop online. Several people did take them, so we'll see what happens!

How’d we do, you ask? Do you want the truth?

We didn’t sell a thing. Either one of us.

Cue the whomp whomp.

Here’s the deal: it ended up being not much of a craft sale and more of a museum benefit. There was only a table with handmade aprons, a lady with some fantastic homemade candles, and the rest was baked goods, lawn sale-type items, or silent auction items to benefit the museum. Most of the other tables didn’t sell anything, either!

But all in all...we still had a ton of fun! We got to meet new faces, spend a couple hours chatting, and get my name out there to some people. Not a totally wasted day, that is for sure! So even though it seems like a lot of wasted effort, I’m thankful for the experience...gently breaking me in to the world of craft sales with a laid back atmosphere and getting me super excited to try it again!

There are craft sales every weekend in November, and I’m still deciding which ones to target...some weekends there are multiple ones in different places, so I am just trying to figure out which ones would be best for my particular products. You know I’ll keep you posted! In the meantime, I am working on adding these newest items to my Etsy shop, so head over there if you like what you see in the pictures above!

Have you ever had a “putting yourself out there” experience? (Kinda sounds like some kind of “coming out” party, which is weird.) How about a time when something practically flopped?

Frugal Photo Friday: Floral

I'm joining in the fun over at Money Saving Mom and Simply Rebekah! Every Friday during October these gals are sharing pictures of ways they save money in certain areas. So far the topics have been Bath and Beauty and Food and Fun, and Home and Decor. Today, we get to choose our own topic!

Here is my frugal picture:

I'm not really sure how to label this frugal tip. Floral? They aren't flowers. Greenery? Nope, they aren't green, either. Weeds? That's closer! :)

Anyway, I couldn't decide on what frugal photo to share with you, so I chose a frugal decision I made this week: use what ya got. In this case, I brought a little fall color into my room with these beautiful, but admittedly, weeds.

I have not idea what they are, but they are growing wild in our field in all kinds of shades of red and orange. So pretty! I just clipped a few and stuck them in these vases. They add the perfect pop of autumn! I especially love them next to these nice textured balls that look more seasonal next to the red and orange:

So this project, again, equals $0. Love it that way! But the punch is huge, just like most other projects I do in here, I smile every time I look at it! What a cheery way to wake up every morning!

What about you? Are you OK with using "wildflowers" (or "wildweeds") in your home, or do you prefer to buy hothouse flowers?

New Printables! 2013 Calendars

My goals for this month included working on some new printables, which I am excited to share with you today!

It is funny to me how these printables evolve over time. What was cool to me last year at this time seemed out-dated this year. For instance, here is a picture of my calendar from last year...

Meh. Not bad, but I'm finding that I'm digging a little more white openness and less gotta-fill-every-inch-with-color-ness. Here is what I've come up with for 2013:

I certainly like it better. and I hope you do too, because this baby is available for purchase in my shop! Buh-bye, 2012 printables, hello 2013!

I combined Saturdays and Sundays onto one space to leave room for a "notes" section to the side. I am loving the wide open spaces for each day, and the minimalistic look to it all! I also took the ol' ink usage into consideration...I couldn't leave the colors off completely because I love lots of color, but there are only small chunks of color, and this could easily be printed in grayscale if that is more your jam.

But that is not all. I've been really pondering how to better organize my blog planning, and I've been working on several printables to help me plan and be better prepared during 2013. For starters, I turned the 2013 calendar in a blog-specific calendar....

The top right-hand corner includes a little space to list monthly blogging goals (something I have not done in the past, but would like to start doing in 2013!).  Any empty squares hold a place for stats...not because I'm tied to my stats counter, but I do like to keep an idea of whats going on, what works well for my readers, etc. I think the "notes" section is going to be my favorite...that is one thing I have found myself needed in my blog planning these last few months!

I'm working on some other blog-related printables, too, that aren't yet available in my shop. Here is a sneak preview:

I have a few others to finish, and then I will offer them all as a package for you other bloggers out there! (Unless you are itching to get started with your blog planning...I'd be happy to list these for you now if you let me know!) I'll be sure to keep you updated! For now both of the calendars are available in my shop so you can begin planning ahead into 2013. And really, where else can you get a yearly calendar for $4?? I digress. I'll also add these to the (sadly disorganized) Printables tab above so you can find them later if need be.

These calendars and other printables are a huge help to me in keeping this organized and allowing me to set goals and plan ahead. But I want them to be a help to you as well! If you have any ideas for printables that will meet your needs in 2013, leave me a comment or jot me a note! I love to make customized things, just like I did with these Thanksgiving printables. Any way I can be a help!

Are you planning into 2013 yet? How do you stay organized and keep motivated? For you fellow bloggers, how do you do with planning your blogging stuff? I'm looking forward to doing better this year!

It's About Time! Part 4

So far in our series on Time Management we’ve talked about the first step to take, setting priorities and goals and how to set a manageable schedule. Today lets talk about the things that seemingly rob us of our time.

There are time takers, and there are time wasters.

Two different things.

First, lets talk about the time takers.

A trip to the grocery store is a time taker, for sure. Depending on your circumstances, it could take a whole lotta time. We are blessed to be able to do all our shopping just 15 minutes away. (We don’t have a lot of things to choose from here, which is wonderful, but thats for another time) So we can feasibly do our shopping without taking up too much time. I know of others, however, that have to drive an hour to get to Walmart, so every situation is different.

Putting the baby to sleep is a time taker. Trust me. Just this morning I spent a good 45 minutes rocking him and trying to get him back to sleep. I had planned to blog during that time, but Judah is more important than this blog, sorry y’all. :) So that took time...but it was a necessary time taker.

Now lets talk about time wasters. There could be a zillion and one of these, each a little different for each of us, but here are a few quick ones that come to mind…

Disorganization

Laziness

Disorganization

Distractions

Over commitment

Not choosing to delegate

Perfectionism

Doing the wrong task for the moment

And dare I mention TV, blogging, P***terest, etc? Nope, I don’t dare.

Can you see the difference between time takers and time wasters? We all have some of both in our lives…’cause if we didn’t have any time takers, our lives would be pretty boring, ya know?

But here is the key….

Make time for the time takers. Refuse to take time for the time wasters.

Did you catch that? Schedule in your time takers. That is vital. We talked last week about scheduling out our days so that we effectively use the 24 hours God has given us. Part of that schedule must include the time takers. Will you spend a half hour changing diapers this morning? Schedule it in!! How glamourous will that look printed on your schedule? :) If you make time for all the necessary things, they won’t get pushed out of your day, and you will be able to estimate how much time you have to work on the not-as-necessary things.

But the time wasters. Leave those out of your schedule, or better yet, turn them into time takers instead! Is disorganization your time waster? Do you spend precious minutes or hours looking for things or moving piles of junk around to get to your washing machine? Schedule in time to work on getting organized...and now, instead of being a time waster, you’ve turned it into a productive time taker! Eventually, once the thing is organized, that time will be able to be used in some other endeavor.

I mentioned that TV, Pinterest, etc. can be time wasters. I’m not saying you can’t ever do those things. Instead, turn them into planned-for time takers! Pinterest is a great tool to learn new things and find ways to benefit your life and home. That is time well spent...but set a goal. Say you can fit in 20 minutes a day on Pinterest. So schedule that in! Now it is just another part of your schedule. Just don’t go over those 20 minutes, and it won’t become a time waster.

Here are some ways to avoid time wasting traps:

Learn to delegate

Set goals

Have a running to-do list

Do the best things first

Learn to say “no”

Ask for help

Learn to use a planning binder or day planner (in a way that benefits you, not hinders you!)

Next week, we’ll wrap up this mini series with some final thoughts about time management. In the meantime, I’d love to hear from you...how are you doing with your time management? Any lightbulb moments you’d like to share with us? How do you handle the seeming time wasters that come into your life?

Money Saving Mom: 21 Days to a More Disciplined Life - New eBook!!

Crystal Paine from Money Saving Mom has done it again...released an eBook that is applicable and beneficial to us all!

21 Days to a More Disciplined Life came about after a blog series on that same subject. This book contains more than just blog posts, however! For 21 days, Crystal highlights several areas of discipline in our daily lives - from setting goals, taking tiny baby steps, allowing discipline to be a process in your life, the dangers of comparison, and many more!

This is not another self-help book. It is intended to be a guide and help to you as you get back on track in certain areas of self-discipline. I’ve not yet read the entire book, but the chunk I did read has motivated me to get going and do something in the area of personal discipline in my life. In fact, I’ve been eagerly awaiting the release of this new eBook, knowing that there are areas in my life where I am lacking in personal disciple, and eager to apply Crystal’s steps in my own life!

Here is my favorite quote so far…

“The more you train yourself that defeat isn’t an option, the sooner you’ll stop being afraid of adversity.”

This book is set up in an easy-to-follow daily format. For each day, there is a brief reading on that day’s subject and goal, followed by a few steps of practical application to help you implement personal discipline. It is not time consuming by any means. How much does this area of discipline mean to you? Is it worth 15 minutes a day of your time? That is all this series requires!

TODAY, Crystal’s book is being released..and for these first three days only (October 23-25), you can get it for just $0.99. Yup, you read that right! As of October 26, the eBook will go to its regular price of $4.99 so get it while the getting is good! Click here to head over and get a copy for yourself.

I’m planning to begin implementing the 21 days to a more disciplined life next week, and I’d love to have you join me! Pick up your own copy and pray this week about the areas of your life that are lacking in self discipline. Then join me next week for 3 weeks of getting back on track in these areas! I’ll be updating you on my progress, and I’d love to hear what steps you are taking in your own life.

Thanks Crystal, for a great book and the motivation to tackle this area of my life!

For those of you as behind the times as I am, here is a note about eBooks. You may think you have to have some fancy reader, tablet or apps to be able to purchase and read eBooks, but that is not always the case. This book comes in a .pdf file, which means that even those of us with only a simple computer can open and read it electronically. So don't be afraid to purchase it!

Update: there is a Kindle version available on Crystal's site as well.

***Note: I was sent a pre-release copy of 21 Days to a More Disciplined Life so I could read it and introduce it to my readers. This post contains my affiliate link. All opinions are 100% my own, and I am confident that this book will be a help and encouragement to you!

DIY Pendant Banner and Thanksgiving Decor

Besides the pumpkin and apples I showed you in yesterday's post, there was one more DIY project I wanted to complete for this Harvest Supper. This project ended up solving a big headache!

Our church fellowship hall is in our unfinished basement. That means the walls are just cold, hard cement. In previous years, we try to stick posters, banners, pictures, etc. on the large expanse of wall, only to have them fall off before the event ever happens. The walls are just too cold for anything to stick to it for very long!

This year, I had an idea to try a pendant banner that I could string from the ceiling. It worked so much better!

I just tied a long piece of string (like a twine-y type of string) across the back wall.

For sake of time, I printed off large letters on colored paper. I also printed off a light triangle shape, which you can see in the yellow page below:

That gave me nice, even triangles without much hassle. I just cut out the printed triangle, and boom. Done. The font I used is called Party LET, the same one I used for this project.

I had some fun fall fabric that I experimented with as well. I thought about putting a swatch of fabric behind each letter, like so...

Blech. That looked horrible. I ended up just putting a triangle-shaped piece on each end of the banner...

...and one in the middle between the words, just to break them up.

It looked great! The bad-lighting-in-the-basement pictures just don't do it justice!

It was such a quick, easy solution to our previous banner troubles! Now every event is going to have a pendant banner, haha! (I'm not even going to take the string down!)

Besides the banner, here are some of the other decor items we used for the supper.

A lady in our church brought in this display for the front door. Love.it.

Oooh, lookee, there is my pumpkin!

My apple tea lights turned out great too. I popped each on on a bamboo mat with a ring of leaves. The apples were a little small, because they were just wild ones from our yard, but they still had a great effect.

And once they were lit...ooh, the ambience!

I whipped up some of these candles as well...just a glass dish, a candle we had on hand, some faux leaves and chinese lanterns. Simple!

Here are some shots of the food...and this is before it was even all out!

All the meat...pork, turkey and ham.

The dessert table was full to overflowing!

I completely forgot to take any pictures once people came downstairs...my bad! Just picture empty plates and serving platters, full bellies, and lots of laughs! It was a great night with about 120 people present...probably our biggest yet!

It takes a ton of work to pull off a supper like this, and I am so thankful for all the ladies that pitched in and helped with the decorating and the food. Several ladies were scurrying around at the last minute, taking food out of the oven, setting out serving utensils, and making sure things were in order. We certainly could not have done it alone, it took the effort of several people working together. Thanks to everyone who had a part! We are so blessed to serve in a church where there is unity to work together!

Frugal Photo Friday: Decor

I'm joining in the fun over at Money Saving Mom and Simply Rebekah! Every Friday during October these gals are sharing pictures of ways they save money in certain areas. So far the topics have been Bath and Beauty and Food and Fun. Today's frugal photo is of the Home and Decor!

Here is my frugal picture:

Decor does not have to be expensive. Sure, we'd all love for our homes to look like they came out of a magazine, but they we wouldn't be able to live in them, would we?! Instead, we can take everyday things or just those *things* that seem to accumulate and use them as decor.

For example, in the left side of my frugal picture is some art I made with foreign coins. Nothing fancy, but it is an interesting piece that blends in well with the rest of my room.  Beside that is my college graduation tassel. Still farther to the right is my name in wood letters, something my Uncle made me when I was a little girl. I love that I can bring sentimental things into the decor of my room! Not only that, but I love that it cost me NOTHING! Can't beat that, now can you?

Of course, we can't leave out seasonal decor...like the apples and pumpkins I showed you yesterday. See, even seasonal decor doesn't have to cost you much! We grew the pumpkin, and the apples were wild from our yard. Another freebie project! Gotta love it!

How do you save $$ in the area of home decor? Do you have a frugal tip you'd like to share?

Pumpkin and Apple Carving

I helped decorate for our Harvest Supper last Saturday, and knew that some fun seasonal stuff was in order. I decided to try my hand at carving pumpkins and apples. Yup, even apples.

I turned to Pinterest for most of my inspiration, so you could call this my Pinterest-inspired project for October as well. There are lots of different pins floating around that show pumpkins with the skin carved off into different things, so I decided to try my hand at it. I totally just did my own thing and made it up as I went along.

I started by writing the word "THANKS" on my pumpkin with a Sharpie.

Then I turned it into nice big block letters that I could carve.

Now, if you have really nice writing or are fancy-pants crafty, you could make nice calligraphic letters and make it all beautiful. But fancy-pants I am not, so block letters was the way to go.

I ever-so-carefully cut in to the skin with a razor blade, and then peeled the skin away in little chunks. It turned out to be very easy!

The skin was really soft and easy to work with. The hardest part was knowing how deep to cut into the flesh and making it all nice and even looking. So I enlisted the help of a cute baby.

Actually he kept asking to sit in my lap (curious as a cat!) and would beat his hands on the pumpkin. Then he would get down to play with toys. We repeated that process every few minutes until....

Ta-da! All finished!

A couple things I wasn't expecting. See how nice and orange the flesh is on this side of the pumkin...

The farther right I went, the more green it got.

I wished the whole thing was that nice orange color (guess I was digging the tone-on-tone look) but my mom thought the green made it stand out more, so whatever.

The other thing that surprised me was that the thing was juicy. As soon as I pierced the skin, it started...I don't know what to call it...bleeding? weeping? Anyway, the letters dripped for days. so now you know, carve pumpkin skin with a paper towel handy.

I only ended up doing the one pumpkin this way because I wasn't sure how it would hold up. I didn't want to carve half a dozen pumpkins and then have them all wilty by the supper. As it turned out, it still looked great a couple days later, so I'm filing that in my memory bank for next year!

My next project was the apples. Which my sister thought you needed a picture of.

I wanted to make apple tea lights. This was another easy-peasy project! I just traced a tea light on the top of an apple, and carefully cut the circle out with a regular paring knife.

I chipped away at it with the knife until all the large chunks were out, and then cleaned things up with a spoon.

Then I swirled some lemon juice and water in there, since that helps keep the apple from browning as soon.

Once the hole was smooth and deep enough, I just pushed a tea light in there.

I love how they turned out! We had great scents too, these candles were hazelnut, cherry, and mandarin melon. Yum!

Tomorrow I'll show you how I actually used these in decorating. I loved how they turned out! In the meantime, what crafty projects have you been doing for fall? Any Pinterest-inspired fall decor?
