Early Bird or Night Owl?

I haven’t forgotten about my intentions to develop a better morning routine.

Did you notice I said “intentions?” I guess that is a sign of a weakening mind right there. :) No, I really fully intend to go through with my plan...it just may take me longer than I thought. I’m suffering from poor planning on my part, thinking I could develop a good morning routine during a month where nothing is normal or routine. Go figure. And next month will be no better!

Nevertheless, I still want to at least lay a foundation for a good morning routine, and I have been doing lots of reading and thinking about it. Thats as far as I’ve gotten, but its a start, right?

Heres my big questions about the whole thing…

1. Does it mean I hafta get up early?

2. What should be included in a daily morning routine? Should stuff like straightening my room be included? Or brushing my teeth? Or should it include stuff that I don’t already do daily?

3. Should I plan down to the minute, like, “do such and such for x number of minutes, then go do this thing for x number of minutes” or should I just lay out what I’m going to do in the proper order “this than this than this” or should I just know what things I want to get done during the morning hours, in no particular order or time constraint?

4. Am I making this too difficult?

I know that I just have to decide what works best for me. What works great for some other blogger might not work for me. I just have to find that niche, which means trying all of the things I just mentioned.

As for getting up early….ahem…I’m thinking it doesn’t matter what time I start the morning routine, right? Just as long as its still the morning hours?

=)

See, that is the other thing...I am a night owl. I have a hard, hard time getting up and getting things accomplished in the morning. I want to, I really do. I envy people that can get up at 5 and have a super productive morning and list off all the things they got accomplished before their kids were even out of bed. I want to be that person more than you know. But I am just not productive in the morning. Which is one reason I really want this morning routine, to help me be more productive even in just the “normal” things.

So this is where I’m at. Now I want to hear from you guys. I’d love to hear about your morning routine, what is included, how it works for you, and how you came about to make it a reality. I know that what you are doing might not work for me, but it will really help me to read it and get some ideas. So please, help me out and comment away.

As always, I’ll be sure to keep you posted in the next few weeks how I’m doing and what conclusions I’ve reached. Just don’t look for a big “now I’m perfect” post by the end of the month, ok?

Are you an early bird or a night owl?

  1. I don't know.
I have had a "morning routine" for as long as I can remember. It is only recently that I heard it called that, I just called it "getting ready for the day." :)

I have a drastically changing schedule, I might be getting up at 5:00 or I might be staying up til 2:00.

So what I do in the morning is:
    Get out of bed.
    Get dressed.
    Put perfume on.
    Comb hair.
Put hair up. (I work in my family's machine shop)
    Curl and spray bangs
    Put on socks.
Glance around to see if I forgot to do something. (Like putting away clothes, putting curling iron away, left something on my desk, ...)
    Head downstairs.
Check in at the bathroom. (Wash face if I didn't the night before, etc.)
Walk into the kitchen and eat breakfast.
I am ready to attack the day!!!

It usually takes me 10 to 15 minuets in my room. Please note that I do not put makeup on. A shop environment on hard on makeup. So I pretty much only wear makeup when I am going to church, or somewhere special.

But this is just what has worked for me at this point in my life. When I go to college this fall, I expect that it will change somewhat. :)

    1. You have a great, streamlined routine! Sounds like you are a "do this and this in this order" person. When I was in a college dorm I think I did a routine similar to this. Thanks for sharing!

  2. You've read about my morning routine already at my blog but one thing I've learned is not to set a "TIME" on anything because every morning is different you have to be flexible and not fret when everything on your "list" doesn't happen. Also I don't write out every detail of what I need to do in my routine (brush teeth, comb hair, do make-up) but that's my personal preference. What I do write down is the basics
Make bed - I leave this on my list because I love to "Check-off" things :) it makes me happy :)
Get dressed - this includes brushing teeth, shower, hair, make-up etc.
Swish-n-swipe - this is a quick wipe down of the bathroom and straightening the bedroom this could be moved to an evening routine for a night owl
unloading the dishwasher - I start the dishwasher in my before bed routine so it doesn't use up the hot water during day hours
Start Laundry - another thing you don't have to do in the morning but my goal is to do a load of laundry from dirty to hung up and folded everyday.
That's basically it, be flexible, and find what works for you in your stage of life.

    1. Sounds like you have a great routine! Thanks for the ideas...I'm settling into a "groove" with mine, but still tweaking it some. I'll keep ya posted!
