I Finished My Goal!

I did it! I finally did it. Something I have wanted to do for a long time. Something I have attempted and never completely accomplished.

What is it you ask? I read through the entire Bible in a year!

I had wanted to do this for a long time. I had even tried, but I had never made it the whole year. It seemed like I’d get halfway through and then something would happen that would put me behind, and then it was too hard to get caught back up, and I’d quit. I also never really had the best plan to do it.

But last year, I got my hands on a calendar to read through the Bible in the year 2010, and I decided to do it. Years ago, I used to visit weekly a dear Christian lady who read through her Bible every year for 30+ years. The whole time I knew her she was practically an invalid, and could not leave her home very often. Besides being an incredible prayer warrior, she was an example in this area of Bible reading. She often would tell me the story about her husband (who at the time had already passed away) and how he had gotten saved later in life. She encouraged him every year to read through his Bible, but he wouldn’t do it. She would tell him, “What are you going to do when you get to Heaven and meet a great saint of the Bible, but you don’t know anything about him?” As a tribute to her faithfulness and consistency, her husband did read through his Bible a couple of times before he passed away. Praise the Lord that I was able to be influenced by this great lady!

This is the time of year for resolutions, is it not? Many people are talking about them, and “cleaning their slate” for the new year. What better resolutions to have than spiritual ones, goals in our Christian life for the year 2011. Maybe its not reading through the entire Bible, but maybe a more consistent prayer life, or witnessing more. Over my next couple of posts I hope to share with you a couple of my resolutions for this year. I have several things I hope to improve in and accomplish during 2011.

I think that resolutions are important for the Christian, as long as we are willing to realize that goals in our spiritual life are akin to promises to God. Even “non-spiritual” resolutions can help bring us closer to God, because those goals may improve other areas of our life, such as discipline, self-control, etc.

Have you made any resolutions this year?
