I Don't Want to Work

I have never wanted to have a job.

There, I said it.

But before you judge me, let me explain.

What I mean is that I have never aspired to have a regular, 9-5 job. The kind where you wake up in the morning, go to work, come home, sleep, wake up, go to work, and so forth. Every day, same thing, over and over for the rest.of.your.life.

Maybe I'm being a bit dramatic, but do you feel like that is the cycle you're in? Like you're obligated to this place you call work and the endless pit of making money to spend it on material and necessary things?  Maybe your family's financial situation forces you to have to work, putting your kids through school or to help with other bills. Maybe you work long hours, overtime even, and feel that you never get to spend time with your kids or family. Maybe you're tired of working all day long with no real vacation and not much to show for it.

That. I never have aspired to do that.

I do know that this is a necessary reality for many women, and I'm not condemning you in any way for it. In fact, I have a deep respect for the lady who has to work outside the home during the day and take care of her family by night. Kudos to you!

All that being said, here is my heart on the matter.

I want to be able to leave room for ministry.

I never want to be so tied to a regular job that it leaves no room to run when service opportunities come up. Even simple things like church workdays, Wednesday night services, or music practice....I want to be able to give my talents to these areas and serve the Lord in this way.

Then there are the big things like missions work. Being tied to a job might not allow you to pick up everything and go to a foreign field. Right now my cousin and her family are in Africa for 6 weeks on a short-term missions project. They aren't tied here, and are able to take some of those opportunities that arise. I love that!

But how can one do it? How can you help contribute to the needs of your family, yet still not be tied down to a job so much that it leaves no room for anything else?

There are so many options for women nowadays to work from their own homes. It even can go as far as setting hours that work well for their family!

Other bloggers have done extensive posts on the options available, but let me just name a few that seem most doable:

Virtual assistant
Selling a product
Babysitting
Product consultant
Blogging

Some of these options may take time before you see regular income coming in. In the meantime, there are options like selling on eBay or Craigslist, taking online Surveys, sponsored tweets, or offering up one of your talents locally like baking and selling your goodies, or teaching music or sewing.

I've been blessed - the Lord has always provided for me without my having to tie myself down to a job. As a teen I cleaned house for a sweet, bedridden lady. Through college I worked part time in the college library during the school year, and was on the housekeeping staff during the summer. I was able to volunteer for 7 months in a missions organization, I've done mending from my home for people I know, and just recently the Lord provided a part-time, temporary job for me - I'm helping a Christian couple out with their business for the next few weeks that I'm in the States. The Lord is so good! He knows the desire of my heart - to leave room for ministry - and He has always, always been faithful in providing that for me.

My point is, there are options! And I'll let you in on a secret...this is one of my biggest dreams for So Sew Organized.

I've watched women that I know struggle with being a slave to a job. (That's how I see it anyway!) They work long days, 6 or 7 days a week, all year long...with almost nothing to show. I'd love to be the one to show them that there could be a better way. To be able to offer them a job that they can do from their own home while taking care of their family. Where they can set hours that work best for them, and take time for ministry as the need arises.

I can't wait for the day that So Sew Organized has grown to this place. We're not there yet, in case you are wondering. :) But its my dream, and I wanted to share it with you so together we can watch it grow to reality.

I'd love hear from you, not only where you currently are in a job situation, but also where you'd like to be in the future. What dreams are you working towards? If you would like to know more about any of the options I listed above, let me know and I'll do my best to point you in the right direction. =)

My Current Devotional Plan

While we are still close to the beginning of a new year {its still January, so it counts, right?} I wanted to share a bit of my plan for my personal Bible reading schedule this year.

Some people stick to the same devotional plan year after year. Nothing wrong with that, but I am not one of those people. I don't want to get caught in a rut of doing something just because it is what I've always done. I like trying new things and sometimes pushing myself to do better than I have in the past.

In the past few years, I've read through the Bible in a year, then did a year of concentrated study on a few particular topics, and then last year read through the Bible twice in one year. That was particularly stretching, but I feel it gave me a great look at the Bible as a whole. I think it will be a while before I attempt it again, however. :)

To start this year off, I'm following a daily reading guide in a quarterly called Feature. This edition is a few years old, but the Bible does not change, so it doesn't really matter. This particular book has a passage to read and a short summary that explains it. So far I'm enjoying it, the writers really have a way of making some pointed, convicting summaries.

I'm using this simple chart to keep track of my progress.

I simply colour in every day that I complete my reading. You can see that I've missed a couple days...I'll be honest! While my goal is to complete this reading every day, the Christian life isn't lived keeping a score card. I want to have that daily communion with the Lord to have fellowship with him, not to make a check mark on this chart. Does that make sense?

This chart will be an eye opener because as the years go on I'll be able to see how many days I really do miss. It is easy to think, "I just missed this one day, its not a big deal." But really seeing how many "one days" I have will show how they all add up! I'm going to work on having the rest of this chart filled in completely by the end of the year.

Besides this reading, I'm also reading a chapter of the book of Proverbs each day, and going through a study book with a group of ladies from church.

I enjoy sharing my current study habits with my blog readers to help keep me focused and accountable, but also to encourage you to have a daily devotional time of your own! Share your current habit with us in the comments. Do you have a devotional time each day? If so, what is your current reading plan? If you don't, what is keeping you from achieving that goal? If I can be of help to you in this area in any way, don't hesitate to contact me privately.

Expecting Grace: A Mother's Day Story

Mother’s Day is just about upon us, and I would be remiss to let it go by without mentioning it. Blog land is full of the stories of amazing mothers these days, along with tons of gift ideas for Sunday. What are you hoping to get or gift?

Today I’d like to introduce to you a mother whose story shows powerfully the love a mother has for her children and family - to the point of nearly giving her life.

It is probably not the mother you’d expect me to talk about today, since she is not any relation to me whatsoever. But after reading her powerful story, I think you’ll agree that this mother is worth mentioning this mother’s day.

This mother’s name is Leah, and during both of her pregnancies she had a rare condition called Hyperemesis Gravidarum, or HG for short. In Leah's own words HG is “a life-threatening pregnancy disease characterized by unrelenting nausea, vomiting, and extreme dehydration that often lasts the entire length of the pregnancy. The only known cure is giving birth.” Statistically 1 in every 300 women suffer from this disease, {However, I personally have heard of 2 women who are currently in the midst of an HG pregnancy!}

What did it mean for Leah to find out she had HG?

-It meant constant sickness and nausea. Constant.
-It meant bed sores.
-It meant countless trips to the doctor and many admissions into the hospital.
-It meant dealing with doctors and nurses who didn’t understand.
-It meant being treated as mentaly insane or depressed.
-It meant being pushed to get an abortion.
-It meant being lied to about the medications she was given.
-It meant spending her first Christmas as a wife and mother in the hospital.
-It meant giving up dreams and ideals to give birth to a miracle, a baby who was not expected to live, a son who is a proof of God’s grace.

To me there is no question that this Godly mother deserves to be mentioned this Mother’s Day!!

Her story is one of miracles and God’s grace - a story worth reading. Funny thing about that - now you can. This past week, Leah's eBook was released, a book meant to educate women about this diabilitating disease.

Expecting Grace tells Leah’s story throughout her nine long months of pregnancy. It tells in more detail about each of the instances I mentioned above. It tells of God’s grace through it all, bringing comfort, grace, and miraculous events to the lives of Leah, her husband, and their unborn baby.

Whether you know someone who has HG or not, this book is worth reading. I literally read it in one sitting...I could not put it down. You will be appaled at the apathy of the doctors, the less-than-desireable conditions of the hospital in our Canadian health care system {seriously, you Americans do not want it!} and the insensitivity of the people who could not understand what this disease was like.

It is a book that will help you understand when someone you know experiences HG...or maybe it is you. Perhaps you are looking for answers or support during your own HG pregnancy. This book will show you that you are not alone.

I’d encourage you to pick up your own copy of Expecting Grace right away. You can also read more about what God is doing in Leah’s life on her blog, Embracing Grace. I know you will be blessed and challenged by what you find there!

Do you know someone with HG? Let them know about this book!

Journaling for the Future

I have never been very good at keeping a journal. Are you? Oh, I have random scribbles written down from my teen years, but I never lasted consistently beyond a few days. I would attempt to begin a journal, intending to be consistent in writing, only to have my determination fizzle out shortly after.

So I never did make it a habit. Until recently, when I decided to include it in my goals for this year.

There are a couple of main reasons why I have decided that keeping a journal of some kind is important. The first is to simply record life events. There are already so many things that I’ve experienced in my relatively short life, “momentous” occasions that I will some day want to remember more clearly. And I failed to write them down. :( Major bummer! Already I regret that!

I know that someday when I have my own kids, I will want to record the funny things they do and say, and the big moments of their lives, like their first steps, or first day of school. As the years fly by, the memories I found most precious will begin to fade - my memory isn’t good enough to remember everything!

I have an aunt that has been a fantastic, consistent journaler for many years, and it is always fun to hear the things that went on when my cousins were younger. It is the only way I can know about these momentous things that happened before I was even around! Yes, I believe it is important to be able to revisit my families past and heritage through the pages of a journal.

But the other main reason I believe a journal is important is found in scripture. Yes, scripture! Even though the Bible does not talk about keeping a journal, I believe there is a principle that applies here.

Over and over through the story of the Israelites, God instructs them to build memorials or institute a sacrifice to be a remembrance long after the event has taken place. We find one such account in Exodus 13:14,

And it shall be when thy son asketh thee in time to come, saying, What is this? that thou shalt say unto him, By strength of hand the LORD brought us out from Egypt, from the house of bondage.

The sacrifice that was established just prior to this verse served one purpose: to teach the children that were not present what the Lord had done in their parent's lives.

This pattern is repeated over and over through the story of the Exodus and wilderness wandering, and I believe it is an important thing to consider. How can we show future generations the greatness of God? By letting them see it in our own lives. Then as they learn from our example to depend on Him and trust Him, they can see these same great things in their own lives!

Keeping a journal to record the great things the Lord has done is like setting up a memorial or a sacrifice. It can remind us of the greatness and power of God, and of His working in our lives. Yes, there may be times in our life when things aren’t looking so great and powerful and wonderful. I believe these need to be recorded as well, because the Lord will work some good out of them, and His greatness will be shown through even the hard events of our lives. We can’t ever know the effect that our testimony could have into the future!

So I’ve begun to journal regularly - several times a week. Beyond life events {because lets face it, there aren’t too many journal-worthy ones these days!} I’ve found it a great place to jot down spiritual tidbits that I pick up in my personal Bible study. Things the Lord is teaching me through His word, or things I want to ponder and sort out longer - having them written down allows me to go back and revisit them if I need to! It is turning out to add a wealth of meaning to my devotional life.

If you don’t keep a journal, why not give it a try and see if you find these things to be true in your life? It doesn’t have to be a daily, time-consuming thing unless that is what works for you. Just a few simple lines, a funny thing someone said, or a verse that struck you today is enough. And remember, you are setting memorials -showing God’s power and grace to the generations to follow you.

If you already journal, I’d love to hear about your method! Why is keeping a journal important to you? What sorts of things do you include?

Thankful: For Fabric and Family

I mentioned Monday a few of the blessings I received last week. I’m so excited to show them to you today!

As I said earlier, my mom’s aunt and uncle were here to visit over the weekend. We had a great time visiting with them and showing them some of the local sights. When we lived in North Carolina we only lived about an hour away from them, so while we didn’t see them often, we saw them more than we do now!

Imagine our surprise when they showed up with gifts. Lots and lots of gifts. From lots of people. It seems like everyone sent up presents for us! They brought several food items we can’t get here in Canada, important things like Scott toilet paper (yup, we’re the people smuggling toilet paper over the border, haha), clothes and gifts from my grandparents, etc. etc! I can’t even list everything they brought!

But the biggest blessing to me was a gift from my cousin. She owns her own business (which I hope to tell you about one of these days!) and she sent me up this fabulous canvas bag.

It is so sturdy, plus she monogrammed my initial onto it! I just love the rope handles. And this baby is big. Plenty of room for lots of things! I actually used it to pack my things in for the retreat last weekend, and it was fantastic.

But the best part...guess what was in the bag??

Fabric. Be still my heart.

The bag was full of beautiful fabrics. For me.

Not only that, but my aunt also threw in a box of scrap fabrics. Yes, more fabric. I was speechless.

You can not truly appreciate this unless A) you love fabric, and B) you live in Canada. Because I can not begin to explain to you how much all this fabric would have cost me if I had bought it outright here. I don’t even want to guess how much. Suffice to say, I was over-the-top excited and blessed by this gift!

Here are close-ups of some that first caught my eye…

Hopefully in the next few weeks you will see lots of new projects and items in my shop! I can’t wait to get busy playing with all of these goodies!

Another blessing I want to share, and perhaps an even more important one, is my thankfulness for the Godly heritage I have. This uncle that was visiting is the brother of my Nana, who passed away nearly 9 years ago. Having him around reminded me of her so much! Every night we would get Uncle Wayne talking about days gone by, telling stories about his family and our heritage.

He told us about his grandfather, his father’s father, and the Godly man that he was. He said he never knew a more patient, gentle man. Both of his grandparents were Christians, which means my Christian heritage goes back at least 5 generations!

Although his grandparents were saved, his father didn’t get saved until only a couple of years before his death. He did, despite his lost condition, raise his 8 children to be moral, hard-working citizens, and all of them trusted Christ in their teen or early adult years. Uncle Wayne told us of his own conviction of sin, and how he came to trust Christ as Saviour and later be instrumental in starting a church in our home state of Maine.

I am so blessed. Not many people can trace their Christian heritage back 5 generations. To be able to sit and hear these stories is a memory I will cherish. Not only do I thank God for allowing me to have this privilege of a Godly family, but I recognize the incredible responsibility to preserve that heritage through the years to come. May the same things be said of me one day, that I was part of a Godly heritage that didn’t stop with me, but continued through me. That is my desire!

We All Could Use a Little Encouragement!

On Monday, I posted a review of the book “Words That Hurt, Words That Heal” by Carole Mayhall. (There is also a pretty sweet giveaway at the end of that post, so hurry over there to enter if you haven’t already!) This book, which I read recently as part of my personal devotions, sparked a lot more thoughts and changes on my part than I could cover in a simple book review. I’m excited to address some of those thoughts today and gain some insight from you in an area that I am still working on improving.

Chapter 1 of this book briefly addressed the area of encouragement.

The author spoke of a brief conversation with her husband, in passing him on the stairs, that changed the outlook of the day for both of them. She speaks of talking with a well-known author who encouraged those around her. A neighbor encouraged her with some rolls and a simple note.

Perhaps the most challenging was this man’s quote:

“I don’t think I’ve had more than twenty minutes with Bob...and those have been in two- and three-minute snatches...but every time we’ve had a moment, he’s shared something with me that was just what I needed.”

Two or three minute snatches.

That isn’t a whole lot of time, folks. How am I spending my two or three minute snatches? In encouragement? Highly unlikely.

I was struck with the truth that encouragement doesn’t have to be a huge, out-flowing, public moment. . . Nor does it have to be limited to a thank you card. Encouragement can happen every day, everywhere we go, with every day people.

Truthfully, encouragement comes easier to some than to others. I do not always have an easy time with words - namely, speaking them out loud (they sound great in my head!) - so an actual spoken word of encouragement is harder for me. But there are ways to learn how to be an encouragement and use this gift practically in every day life.

Carole Mayhall says,

“At one point in my life I asked the creative God for some creative ideas as to how to be an encourager.”

The truth is, God doesn’t ask us to do anything without providing the means to do it. If we ask him to help us become an encourager, He will! He is a creative God that knows just what people need...and just we we need to know to make this a reality.

So I asked our creative God for some ideas, and He gave me these:

1. Seek personal encouragement from God’s word. What is in my heart will come out my lips...if there is something from God’s word that has helped me or encouraged me, I can pass it along to someone else.

2. Take advantage of small moments. No moment is too small or too insignificant!

3. Find something to praise the other person for. This may be the biggest encouragement, knowing that you have noticed something in particular and are thankful for it. I’ve tried this on my family, since they are whom I have the most contact with on a daily basis. I don’t have children of my own yet, but I try to put myself in my sibling’s shoes and remember when I was their age - what would have been encouraging to me? What things did I wish people would notice? Then, compliment them on that thing.

4. Smile! A simple smile can turn another’s frown upside down.

5. Pray that the Lord will give you someone specific to be an encouragement to on a regular basis.

6. Write letters. Just a newsy, how-are-you letter can let someone know they are not forgotten. We all love to get mail in any form!

7. Say thank you. We should all be thanking others for services done or gifts given, but do we thank others for small things? This is another area I’ve tried out on my family. It is their responsibility to do certain chores - for instance, sweeping the floor. Am I required to thank them for that service? It doesn’t seem so, since it is their “job.” But a quick, “thank you for sweeping that floor” could be an encouragement for them to keep doing a good job.

8. Buy the book, Words That Hurt, Words That Heal and read other suggestions from that author that I didn’t mention here. Or, enter the giveaway and try to snag a copy free! :)

These are just a few things the Lord has brought to my mind about encouragement. My prayer is that the Lord will use these things to turn me into an encourager, and that it will become a regular part of my life!

As I was thinking through and preparing this post, a friend of mine (oblivious to the fact that I was going to be posting on this subject) posted the following on Facebook:

THAT bit of encouragement is going to leave a big impression! :)

Now I’d love to hear from you. What are some ways you can think of to be an encouragement to others? I’d love to add more to my list. How has encouragement had an impact on your life in the past? Do you feel you are a natural-born encourager, or do you have to work on it more?

For further reading you might enjoy this post or this post...both popped up in my reader while I was mulling over this topic. What a coincidence. :)

Countdown to Easter: Our Resurrection Eggs

I thought I would show you how our family counts down the last 12 days to Easter:

We use Resurrection Eggs!

We were given these a couple of years ago, and appreciate the way they focus us on the real meaning of this holiday...not bunnies, chicks and candy, but the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ!

Each day we open an egg...

The cute little chicks don't come with the Resurrection Eggs, they were just something else given to us that we use to display the eggs.

There are also verses to read and a short summary of what it in that day's egg. (Note: thy do not use the Kings James Version, which we prefer, but you can easily read the verses yourself straight out of the Bible.)

Here is what we have opened so far:

A donkey - for Jesus triumphal entry into Jerusalem
3 Coins - representing the 30 pieces of silver that Judas betrayed the Lord for.
A silver cup - symbolic of the last supper
Praying hands - for Jesus night vigil in Gethsemane
A leather cord - representing the cat 'o' nine tails with which Jesus was scourged.

It is fun to watch our "scene" grow with new additions each day!

We also love that these are not called "Easter Eggs," but "Resurrection Eggs."

We don't celebrate Easter - we celebrate the resurrection.  Easter as a holiday has been way to commercialized. The focus isn't on Christ anymore, its on us. In this small way, we can keep our thoughts focused on what Christ did for us!

I'd love to hear how other families with littles (or without!) celebrate the resurrection! Are you looking forward to Sunday for what it truly means?

A Conversation With No One (But one I dearly wish I could have)

Excuse me, ma'am?

Can I stop you for a second? Please stop saying those things. I happen to know that family you are talking about. That one with several kids? Yeah, I'm actually pretty close to them. I'm not trying to argue with you, but I think maybe you don't know all the facts.

Is there any good reason for you to be telling me these things about that family? I know they have several children, but that doesn't make them any less spiritual than you or I. In fact, my Bible says that children are a reward from the Lord. (Psalm 127:3) Yeah, those children are the Lord's blessing on that family. There are some that wish they could experience that sort of blessing from the Lord!

Yes, I know that they aren't always the perfect parents, but like I said before, you and I do not know all the details of their home. Did you know that one of their sons has a learning disability? When he misbehaves, its not always a disobedience or sinful issue. His mother and father are trying to learn as much as they can about helping him, but it is hard for his other siblings to understand. Imagine what that would be like if it was your child?

I realize that this family might not do things the same way that you do. But does that make them wrong? Who says that you are right? I don't believe God gave you the "judge others" wand. In fact, He says, Judge not, that ye be not judged." (Matthew 7:1) Some day, record the things that you say throughout a day, and then play it all back, as if you are hearing someone else saying those things about you. How do you feel?

I'm not saying this because I'm some super-Christian. Quite the opposite. I've struggled with the words that come out my mouth. I've often likened myself to the apostle Peter, always saying things without thinking about them first. But the Lord has really worked on me, to the point where it pains me to hear you talk about others in this way. Be on guard: we are women, gossiping comes easy for us, and the Devil knows it and uses it. Thats why we must be extra-vigilant.

Proverbs says that the words of a talebearer are as wounds. (Proverbs 18:8) That verse is often quoted because of the damage it can do to the one being gossiped about, but did you ever think about the damage it does to me, the person you are gossiping to? Now, every time I see this family, I am going to remember the negative things you said about them, and wonder if it is true or not. I will resist getting too close to this family, because I don't know if I can trust them any more. So not only has this family been wounded, and myself, but also our relationship, all by your words, spoken in a hasty moment. Something tells me that isn't what you are going for.

Next time you want to say something negative about someone else, remember the words of Proverbs 7:16-19. A lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood, a false witness, and he that soweth discord are all in the list of things the Lord hates. Hate is a strong word, and if the Lord feels that strongly about it, then so do I.

***Note: the above scenario is not real, just an instance I created to illustrate my point. I am not trying to point fingers at anyone inparticular, because I know that if I do, I'll have 4 fingers pointed back at me. I just hope that each of you will consider the impact your words have on others. For further study and reflection, do a study of the verses about speech in the book of Proverbs.)

***UPDATE: I promise I had no idea the Duggars were expecting when I wrote this. Total coincidence. You can read about that announcement here. And they have super cute kids. Just sayin'.

A Hero Of Another Sort

Its been a blessing for me to celebrate this Memorial Day in the U.S.A. As many of you know, last year I had a, ah, little bit of a hard time adjusting to being in Canada. :) Being out of the country for a year and now being back has made me appreciate my American heritage so much.

My heart goes out to those that are suffering today from the lost of a loved one or the separation of a loved one in the military. My mind travels to those overseas, desperately missing the comforts of home and family. I am filled with gratitude for those sacrificing their lives for our country.

I have not personally experienced this separation of having a loved one in the military. But I would like to tell you the story today of the one in my family who has fought a different battle for his family's freedom.

Norman Gower suffered a great deal in his teenage years with congestive heart failure, spending time in Arizona to try to improve his health. Because of his heart problems, he was not permitted to enter the military.

Instead he married, raised five children, and through much hard work and determination built a business and became a comparatively wealthy man. His family enjoyed many comforts that he was able to provide for them. He was, by the world's standards, living the American dream.

But when he was in his 30's, his life was changed forever when he found Christ, and accepted Him as Saviour. His life took a drastically different direction; now, instead of seeking wealth and prestige, he was seeking a deeper relationship with God. He enjoyed that fellowship for the next 40 years.

His life was also changed in other ways. During the years he walked with Christ, he was misunderstood by others, even other Christians. He was mocked and ridiculed for his deep relationship with Christ. He lost all his wealth and comforts due to the dealings of a deceitful business partner. He was fighting a battle. A battle not only for his own spiritual life, but also for the spiritual life of his family.

He passed away at the age of 72, quietly, comfortably, in his favorite chair. He sat down and his heart simply stopped, weakened by all those years of heart failure. Did he die wealthy? Not monetarily, no. Did he die with all the creature comforts that our world labels "success?" No. As it is said of Enoch, in the Old Testament, "Enoch walked with God: and he was not; for God took him." (Genesis 5:24) Norman Gower walked with God, until God took him home.

But was it worth it? Was the battle he fought called Christianity worth all the pain and sacrifice? Did he get the victory? Or was his battle all in vain?

I'll let you be the judge. Consider this: From Norman Gower's 5 children came 15 grandchildren. From those 15 grandchildren came 22 grandchildren (as of right now), with one in the oven, so to speak. :) All together, there are roughly 52 of Norman Gower's descendants that are right now walking with the Lord, living for him, and being brought up in God-fearing homes. Out of those 52 there are 5 pastors, several deacons, many that have taken short or long-term missions trips, and a couple dozen Christian families all striving to make a difference for Him. So tell me, how well was the battle fought?

Yes, it was a different battle than what most today are thinking of. But I am forever indebted to Norman Gower, my grandfather, for fighting his battle that allowed me the freedom of a Christian home. He displayed for me what the Christian life is all about, and left a legacy for me to pass on to my children.

"I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith:
Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing."
II Timothy 4:7-8

"Except the LORD build the house..."

I know that all of my posts lately have been centered around Scripture, and while I was not trying to do that, I make no apology for it either! What better thing could I be meditating on? I don’t know what I would do without the “more sure word” to help me through each day.

Today is no exception. I have been reading through the book “Passion and Purity” by Elizabeth Elliot as an addition to my devotions each morning. What a challenge, conviction, encouragement, and comfort this book has been. I read it two years ago for a class, and while I read it with interest, I have to admit that I did not digest it as I should have. I missed many, many lessons that book has to teach that I greatly could have used at that point of my life.

So with that book in the back of my mind, I was reading in Psalms today, and I came across this verse:

“Except the LORD build the house, they labour in vain that build it:”

Psalm 127a

I got to thinking about this verse. I don’t know about you, but whenever I read this verse before, I always applied it something like this: The Lord must be the Head of every family, and everything thats done within a family should be striving to obey Him and be like Him. That house must be focused around Christ. I think that this application is true, but today I saw it differently. I focused more on the word build.

I thought about building something, say with building blocks. You usually start with one larger block that will hold up the rest of your structure. This block could represent the Lord as being the foundation, the One on Whom we build everything else. He is a sure foundation for this structure we are to build.

The next blocks need to be the husband and wife, since they are pretty key to building a house. :) But wait...the verse says the LORD builds the house...not the husband, not even the husband/wife team can do it. The LORD must do it, which means He is the One who will determine who this house is to contain. If the man decides to take this matter into his own hands of who he is going to pick to build this house, the verse says he is labouring in vain. God must pick his wife for him in order to build this house. If the woman (heaven forbid!) decides she is going to pick her partner for this house, she also is working in vain. Only the LORD can do this choosing, no one else.

Lets continue this logic and think about the children for this house. I’ll not get into this much,

because I am sure there are a lot of varying opinions out there. :) It is something to think

about, though: if the LORD is building this house, don’t you think He has the power to control how many children are in this house? Beyond that, think about the homes with children with learning disabilities or mental handicaps. The LORD built this home, so these children also were right in his blueprint...it didn’t surprise Him.

The next step of this home is the friends we make and the people we

invite into this home. Yes, the LORD wants to build this part of our home as well. He knows the influences we should have on our lives, and He also knows those people that need our Godly influence. He knows when a friend moves away and He can send a new friend our way in return. Such has been the case in my life recently...my friends and I scattered hither and yon when we graduated, but the LORD sent another lady into my life when I wasn’t even looking for it.

Lastly, lets add our hobbies, jobs, sports, interests, and anything else that builds a home and consumes some of our energy. Each of these things is needful and important, and the LORD wants to help us enjoy these things while keeping each in its proper place. The LORD knows how much we can take of these outside events, and He has given us a perfect little word to help us in this area: the word NO! Yes, the LORD is very interested in this aspect of our lives as well and will send us opportunities through these things to be a witness for Him.

Well, despite my crude drawing, I hope that you get the picture I see in my mind and have tried to convey. The bottom line is, every aspect of my life is important to God, and He wants to be the one to build and construct it all. If I just hand the reigns over to Him, He can do exceedingly abundantly above what I could ask or think, and I praise Him for that!
